Donation and Stewardship

Many Orthodox Christians find that giving weekly—along with prayer and fasting—is an important part of their spiritual growth.

“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.” (Malachi 3:10)

Stewardship and Donations

The ministries and operations of Twelve Holy Apostles are entirely funded from three sources: stewardship, our annual Taste of Greece festival, and specific offerings. Our festival generated 25% of our budget in 2023—a testament to the love and sacrifice of our volunteers. The remaining 75% is provided by our parish stewards and special gifts. This stewardship is an example of how caring for the parish is like taking care of one's home.  Our work together makes Twelve Holy Apostles a warm and loving parish that promotes the spiritual growth of those who come through our doors.

Debt

"Do not be faint, but provoke even your friend, for whom you assumed a debt; do not give sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids, that you may be saved as a gazelle from the snares,
and as a bird from the trap." (Proverbs 6:4-6)

In the book of Proverbs, we are advised to flee debt as intensely as a gazelle or a bird escaping death! In our world, we are surrounded with opportunities to go into debt. It has come to seem like a normal part of life.

But debt is expensive. Many people find that, once they get out of debt, their paychecks begin to cover what they need. They realize that, along with the debt, they were carrying a large burden of stress about money.

It will take effort, but you might be able to get out from under your debt in less time than you imagine!

There are many things you can do to get the ball rolling. Check out the resources offered by Dave Ramsey (click here).

For a more in-depth coverage to this process, there is an online class.

All of this is summarized in this book, The Total Money Makeover (click here to buy).

Tithing

“Tithing,” which means donating one tenth of your income, is a way to put God first in our lives.

It is a practice written about early in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 14:23, Malachi 3). For us, it is not a law or rule, but rather, an acknowledgement that everything we receive in our lives is a gift from God.

Many people have had the experience of being blessed by tithing in different ways. It can open our eyes to the spiritual consequences of how we use our money, and it is a potent way of taking action in our spiritual lives.

If it feels like too much to begin tithing right away, consider picking a percentage that you can manage (5%?) and start with that. The more you stretch, the more potential there is for positive change in your own financial life.

Many people say that, once they begin giving intentionally, it becomes one of their greatest joys!

Financial Coaching

Our deacon, Fr. Vincent, is a trained financial coach. If you are ready to begin cleaning up your financial life, or need help dealing with financial difficulty, he may be able to help you figure out your best path.

Financial Coaching is free to those who attend our church; it is completely confidential. Fr. Vincent is not an investment advisor or broker. However, he can help you find a process that works for you, and he can provide advice, support, and accountability. Call him at 218-728-5812 or email him (click here) for more information.
